Materialism or Faith - Which is More Rational?

What is more rational: to accept the truth claims of the "new atheists," or of Christian apologists?  The answer rests with the logical proposition that it is more rational to believe something that is true than to believe something that is false.

Atheist claims to the contrary, the question whether God exists or not[1], has not yet been answered using scientific methods, in spite of some interesting attempts to do so.[2]  One way to settle this issue is to test truth claims of the atheistic worldview and to weigh the logical conclusions derived from that system of thought.  Two logical tests we can apply to the atheist worldview are the "Problem of Evil" and the "Design Argument."

First, in examining the pervasiveness and persistence of evil, we note that "...while atheists deny God's existence, they affirm the reality of evil.  They think the existence of evil is one of the primary evidences that there is no God."[3]  Yet the very idea of evil presents a self-defeating obstacle for atheists.  Where does the idea of evil originate if the universe is only material?  Nietzsche, an icon of the atheistic movement, explained that "...morality is merely an interpretation of certain phenomena ─ more precisely, a misinterpretation....  Moral judgments are...never to be taken literally: so understood, they always contain mere absurdity." [4]

Atheists must accept moral relativism because they deny an absolute moral Lawgiver.  "If relativism is true, the objection against God based on evil vanishes.  There is no true evil to discuss, only differing opinions about what is pleasant or unpleasant, desired or not desired."[5]  Those who sincerely reject absolute standards of right and wrong are "a homicide detective's worst nightmare.  The quintessential relativist is a sociopath, one with no conscience."[6]  The "problem of evil" argument actually supports the existence of God because whenever atheists complain about evil, they are making an appeal to an absolute standard, which must come from a transcendent Lawgiver.

Atheists claim materialistic explanations for mysteries of life and the universe are rationally superior to Theistic explanations.  Yet they insist no evidence exists pointing to supernatural explanations.  This is akin to losing your keys in the driveway, but because it is raining outside, you only look for your keys in the garage.  Carl Sagan of Cosmos fame opined that scientists must always 'go where the evidence leads them.'  "We wish to pursue the truth no matter where it leads.  But to find the truth, we need imagination and skepticism both."[7]  Yet when atheists seriously examine the evidence for design and a Creator, they face a dilemma between the facts and their worldview.

World famous atheist philosopher Antony Flew, after arguing five decades in defense of atheism, became convinced God must exist.  "In his fascinating 2007 book There is a God, Flew explains his reasons for recanting atheism and affirming the reality of God...He highlights three main considerations: the laws of nature, the existence of the cosmos, and the presence of life."[8]  On the regularity and dependability of nature, "...renowned physicist Paul Davies has remarked that "even the most atheistic scientist accepts as an act of faith that...there is a rational basis to physical existence manifested as a law like order in nature....So science can proceed only if the scientist adopts an essentially theological worldview."[9]  To be faithful to the scientific method puts atheists in an untenable position:  they must deny obvious conclusions from their own data.

Evidence is mounting that the universe was designed and created.  "The fine tuning argument for God is strong and getting stronger, as the astonishingly precise balance of physical constants is continually clarified by science.  For many folks, such as Antony Flew, the inference to God has become irresistible."[10]  To the dedicated scientist, the statistically impossible fine-tuning of the universe demands an explanation.  "...It is valid science to look for intelligent primary causes to events that show signs of intelligence.  Archeologists do it all the time.  When they find pottery or arrowheads, they rightly conclude that some intelligent being produced it."[11]

However, this line of inquiry is fiercely resisted, and atheists cannot give a rational explanation why the evidence should not be pursued 'where it leads.'  As Ben Stein, producer of the documentary Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed explained, "We are losing our freedom in one of the most important sectors of society: science.  I have always assumed that scientists were free to ask any question, to pursue any line of inquiry, without fear of reprisal.  But recently I've been alarmed to discover that this is not the case.  Academic freedom and scientific research has been stifled due to ideological worldviews, not where the evidence leads..."[12]  "If the evidence falls so clearly on the side of theism, then how does one explain the phenomenon of atheism?"[13]  "The atheist's problem is rebellion against the plain truth of God, as clearly revealed in nature...This is not a loss of intelligence so much as a selective intellectual obtuseness or imperviousness to truths related to God, ethics, and human nature." [14]

"Alvin Plantinga has developed an ingenious argument showing why belief in naturalism can never be reasonable."[15]  If Darwinian evolution were true, no feature of natural selection requires our species to believe actual truth, so long as we survived to continue the gene pool.  In fact, if a false belief helped an organism to survive, then the practicality of that belief does not ensure its truth.[16]  "Nor does the practicality of an entire cognitive system guarantee that it is aimed at forming true beliefs.  This means that...if naturalism is true, we have no reason to believe it is true.  If ever there was a self-defeating worldview, this is it."[17]

Whether atheism is true or not, it is not logically self-consistent.  First, the atheist must reject that we can know intellectual absolutes, since we are only products of blind operations of chance, and our minds are not provably reliable.  Second, the atheist must restrict the search for truth only to places where a Creator may not be proven to exist.  Based on the irrational behavior and logical contortions atheists must use to defend their worldview, it appears belief in God is the more rational proposition because it is more likely to be true.

Apologetics - Reality Must Necessarily Be "Created"

When your friend, family member, neighbor or co-worker questions the reliability of the Bible or rejects its truth claim that God is Sovereign and Eternal, remember this:

  • They may call upon scientific "facts"... but the facts seem to change every few years
  • Their best "logical" arguments are always flawed
  • They rationalize their position or philosophy to justify their immoral lifestyles
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?  HCSB

Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “God does not exist.” They are corrupt; they do vile deeds  HCSB

When cornered most people admit that they "don't know if God exists and really don't want to look too hard because they are afraid they will find Him".  Yet the universe shouts out the majesty and sovereignty and omnipotence and glory of God.

Psalm 19:1-4 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.  Day after day they pour out speech; night after night they communicate knowledge.  There is no speech; there are no words; their voice is not heard.  Their message has gone out to all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world.  HCSB

We are engaged in a struggle of World Views

Paul explains in Romans 1 that people know God exists, but they suppress that knowledge.  God reveals Himself to all mankind through His creation as "General Revelation":

  • The vastness and power of the universe
  • The logical order and intricate balance that denotes design
  • Our built-in moral compass that tells us the way things "ought" to be
  • Our yearning for meaning and relationship
One side says that we are an accident, living on a speck of dust in a vast, impersonal, empty universe with no purpose, no future and no meaning to our existence.  The other side tells us we are special, loved, created with a purpose by an All Wise, All Loving Creator who desires a relationship with us forever.

Why is it more logical to believe the former than the latter?  Let us employ pure logic to deduce what is truth and ultimate reality.
Psalm 111:10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;  all who follow His instructions have good insight.  His praise endures forever.  HCSB

Principal Rules of Logic

  • Law of Non-Contradiction - part of the scientific method, and foundation for all logic.  Something cannot both be "true" and "false" at the same time and in the same relationship.
  • Law of Causality - for every Effect there must be a Cause.
  • Assumption of the Reliability of Sense Perception – while realizing the limitations of our senses, and knowing we can be fooled, ultimately our five senses confirm logical outcomes.
Science assumes and depends upon these self-evident or "rationally grounded" truths.  We take them for granted and base decisions -- even making legal judgments based on evidence that follows these rules.

Can Pure Logic Reveal Ultimate Truth?

There are only four ways we can explain "how we are here"

  1. Reality is an illusion
  2. Reality created itself
  3. Reality has always 'been'
  4. Reality was created by an intelligent, all Powerful Being that has always 'been'
Let's look at each "explanation" for reality using the rules of logic and our reasoning skills.

Option 1 - Reality is an Illusion

Some Eastern religions teach reality is an illusion, but practically speaking they do not “live” according to their beliefs.  They ignore the Assumption of the Reliability of Sense Perception when it is convenient.  Besides, several "logical" questions are left unanswered by their explanation:

  • Whose illusion is it?
  • How can you tell reality is an illusion?  Could reality be "real" but appear as an illusion?
  • Aren't illusions at their core just deceptions?   Who is trying to deceive us then?
  • If we are in an illusion, why do we have the illusion that this is all "real"?
This thought system was disproven logically in 1637 by Renee Descartes - "Cogito ergo Sum" "I am thinking, therefore I exist"

  • Thinking about one’s existence proves—in and of itself—that an "I" exists to do the thinking; or, as Descartes explains, "We cannot doubt of our existence while we doubt … ."
  • The act of doubting one's own existence proves the reality of one's own existence.
  • This proposition became a foundation for all logical thought and the basis for all knowledge (how you "know" you know something, or Epistemology).

Option 2 - Reality Created Itself

David Hume and others philosophers have tried to decouple cause and effect, and say reality created itself.  But that is both bad science, and logically contradictory. Also, again, it's not “real” in the sense Mr. Hume believed in cause and effect as he conducted his daily life.

The “Enlightenment” of the 18th century argued that the “God Hypothesis” was no longer necessary, and that material things come into being from “spontaneous generation”.  Yet, while scientists ridicule the idea of spontaneous generation today, they still hold that the universe exploded from nothing.  On a random Tuesday afternoon, "Nothing" exploded and "created" everything.

Nothing + Chance = Everything

The idea of chance “being” anything is a myth.  Chance is simply a method to put boundaries around what we don't know.  After all, if we were omniscient, we would always know what will happen next without "odds" or probability.

The flaw here is that scientists try to apply the Law of Causality to chance, when chance is merely a way to measure the outcome of forces at work with different possible outcomes.  Chance does not “cause” a coin to flip.  It is only a way to measure what happens when a coin is flipped (by some other force) over a number of trials.  Chance has no “being” or "power" to affect anything, it is simply a report of what could happen when other forces interact.

Option 3 - Reality Has Always Been

Until about 30 years ago, this was the standard model of the universe.  Carl Sagan's “The Cosmos” stated as a fact that “the universe is all there is, ever was, and ever will be",  which is presumptuous at best, since we have no idea what will be forever in the future.  Now, with Big Bang Cosmology, the scientific community is across the horns of a dilemma.  The universe clearly "began" to exist, and yet scientists don't want to recognize the "Cause".

Another flaw with the infinitely old universe:  entropy as explained by the Second Law of Thermodynamics.  Essentially this law proves that if the universe were infinitely old,  it would be cold and dead and bereft of structure.  If, as the universe appears to now, continue to expand eternally, it would also be infinitely large and infinitely far apart.  The only "workaround" is to violate the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy, and conjecture that new matter and energy spontaneously erupts out of "nothing" to explain why we see so much energy, structure and matter.

You cannot argue (as you can for the existence of an eternal God) that the universe has the “power of being” within itself, as there was a time when the universe did NOT exist.  All materialist scientists can do is go back to Option 2, which violates the logical Law of Non-Contradiction.

Option 4 – Reality Has Been Created by a Divine Eternal Being

Has there ever been a time when there was nothing?

If there ever had been such a time, then there would still be nothing.  "Ex Nihilio Nihil Fit" - the Latin phrase "out of nothing, nothing comes" is an axiom we all seem to understand.   Things don't just "pop" into existence…or do they?

Assuming an Immaterial uncreated eternal being with omnipotence and omniscience does not violate the logical Law of Non-Contradiction. This Being did not have to create Himself or be created.

Additionally, since the Law of Causality states that every Effect must have a Cause,  it is perfectly logical to have an “Uncaused Cause”.  This option is also rationally necessary, since "something" always had to exist for anything existing now.

Conclusion:  Logically, God Must Exist

Using the deductive power of science we can conclude:

  • Nature cannot create itself:  disproving the idea of pantheism that nature created itself.
  • Materialism must be false: matter and energy cannot create themselves (they can convert, but the Law of Conservation of Matter and Energy does not allow new matter or energy to be created out of nothing).
  • Nature could not have existed eternally based on observations to date and due to entropy (explained by the second law of thermodynamics).
  • Nature had to be "created" and by a Cause sufficient in Power and Intellect to create the specified complexity, fine tuning and design observed.
The Bible has rigorously explained this in non-technical terms for thousands of years.  Our reality is created by an eternal, omnipotent, omniscient Creator who loves us.

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

John 2:1-5. All things were created through Him, and apart from Him not one thing was created that has been created.

Nehemiah 9:6  You alone are Yahweh. You created the heavens, the highest heavens with all their host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to all of them, and the heavenly host worships You.

Colossians 1:15-17 For everything was created by Him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and by Him all things hold together.

Psalm 90:2  Before the mountains were born, before You gave birth to the earth and the world, from eternity (past) to eternity (future), You are God.

Psalm 93:2  Your throne has been established from the beginning; You are from eternity

Psalm 139:13 For it was You who created my inward parts; You knit me together in my mother’s womb.

Psalm 41:13 Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting. Amen and Amen

Jeremiah 10:10  But Yahweh is the true God; He is the living God and eternal King

Job 36:26 How great is God—beyond our understanding! The number of his years is past finding out.

Jude 25: to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!

Job 9:4   God is wise and all-powerful.  Who has opposed Him and come out unharmed?

Job 28:24: For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.

Proverbs 15:3 The eyes of the LORD are in every place, watching the evil and the good.

Isaiah 42: 5 This is what God, Yahweh, says— who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people on it and life to those who walk on it

Isaiah 46:10 I declare the end from the beginning, and from long ago what is not yet done, saying: My plan will take place, and I will do all My will.

Romans 11:33-36: Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became his counselor? Or who has first given to him that it might be paid back to Him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen

Why Engage in Apologetics?

God the Spirit must enlighten the soul of someone to be persuaded of the truth claims of the Bible.  Why engage in Apologetics?  It's a great deal of effort and you won't convert some people.  God commands Christians to reflect Christ, and Christ is Truth.  So we are to give a defense to:
  • Silence the critics of God by responding to objections
  • Fulfill the Great Commission by offering the Truth about Christ

God demands you to give an account of your faith

1 Peter 3:15 ...honor the Messiah as Lord in your hearts.  Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.  However, do this with gentleness and respect, keeping your conscience clear, so that when you are accused, those who denounce your Christian life will be put to shame.  HCSB
Apologetics is one way we honor the Lord.  You wouldn't let someone “talk about your momma” without raising an objection – why would you stand silently by when someone slanders God?  As Christians we combat and demolish lies against Him:
2 Corinthians 10:3-5  For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does.  The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.  We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  HCSB
Don't be surprised at the hostility you receive when you present the Truth.  God's Word divides people
1 John 3:8  The one who commits sin is of the Devil, for the Devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the Devil’s works.
Hebrews 4:12-13  For the word of God is living and effective and sharper than any double-edged sword, penetrating as far as the separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It is able to judge the ideas and thoughts of the heart.  No creature is hidden from Him, but all things are naked and exposed to the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
The pagan says Christianity is not rational or scientific -- that Christians just “believe” in spite of the facts.  Apologists must counter these lies with reason and facts in a calm, respectful way.

What are we up against?

“The average Christian does not realize that there is an intellectual war going on in the universities and in the professional journals and scholarly societies.  Christianity is being attacked as irrational or obsolete, and millions of students, our future generation of leaders, have absorbed that viewpoint.“ Dr, William Lane Craig, http://www.reasonablefaith.org/in-intellectual-neutral#_edn4
Today in society, Christianity, and in fact all religion, is considered a 'self-delusion'.   Coming from the perspective that Christians are 'dorks' and believe in myths and legends, we are viewed as intellectually “damaged” or “lacking” of some key mental ability.  Society uncritically believes that our “brightest” minds are firmly committed naturalists and evolutionists.
False ideas are the greatest obstacles to the reception of the gospel. We may preach with all the fervor of a reformer and yet succeed only in winning a straggler here and there, if we permit the whole collective thought of the nation or of the world to be controlled by ideas which, by the resistless force of logic, prevent Christianity from being regarded as anything more than a harmless delusion. Under such circumstances, what God desires us to do is to destroy the obstacle at its root.  J. Gresham Machen, "Christianity and Culture," Princeton Theological Review 11 (1913): 7.
“The root of the obstacle is to be found in the university, and it is there that it must be attacked.”   Dr, William Lane Craig, http://www.reasonablefaith.org/in-intellectual-neutral#_edn4
Dr. Machen warned us about this in 1913!
“What is today a matter of academic speculation begins tomorrow to move armies and pull down empires. In that second stage, it has gone too far to be combated; the time to stop it was when it was still a matter of impassionate debate. So as Christians we should try to mold the thought of the world in such a way as to make the acceptance of Christianity something more than a logical absurdity.”  J. Gresham Machen, "Christianity and Culture," Princeton Theological Review 11 (1913): 6.
Why is it important that Christians never cede the intellectual 'high ground' to the secularists?  Because
“...the gospel is never heard in isolation. It is always heard against the background of the cultural milieu in which one lives. A person raised in a cultural milieu in which Christianity is still seen as an intellectually viable option will display an openness to the Gospel which a person who is secularized will not. For the secular person you may as well tell him to believe in fairies or leprechauns as in Jesus Christ! “  Dr, William Lane Craig, http://www.reasonablefaith.org/in-intellectual-neutral#_edn4
Yet for all the intellectual posturing and self-congratulation of the atheistic crowd, they betray their own insecurity in many ways.  Start with the key question of faith “Do you believe in evolution?”  Evolution, you see, is a belief system.  It must be believed or disbelieved – it is not a scientific fact that can be accepted without doubt because it in reality is not a fact or even a good scientific model for the complexity and information bearing design seen everywhere in biological systems.

What part has the church played?

J. P. Moreland, in his challenging book "Love Your God with All Your Mind" has severe criticism for our churches that cater to a 'buyers market' mentality, filled with consumers who attend to be entertained and filled with spiritual energy without taking the personal responsibility for their own growth.  He asks of that church
What would be the theological understanding, ...the evangelistic courage, the. . . cultural penetration of such a church? …If the interior life does not really matter all that much, why spend the time ...trying to develop an ...intellectual, spiritually mature life?  If someone is basically passive, he or she will just not make the effort to read, preferring instead to be entertained.  If a person is sensate in orientation, music, magazines filled with pictures, and visual media in general will be more important than mere words on a page or abstract thoughts.  If one is hurried and distracted, one will have little patience for theoretical knowledge and too short ...an attention span to stay with an idea while it is being carefully developed...
And if someone is overly individualistic, infantile, and narcissistic, what will that person read, if he or she reads at all? ...Christian self-help books that are filled with self-serving content, ...slogans, simplistic moralizing, a lot of stories and pictures, and inadequate diagnosis of issues that place no demand on the reader.  Books about Christian celebrities. ...what will not be read are books that equip people to ...develop a well-reasoned, theological understanding of the Christian religion, and fill their role in the broader kingdom of God ...[Such] a church ...will become ...impotent to stand against the powerful forces of secularism that threaten to bury Christian ideas under a veneer of soulless pluralism and misguided scientism.
In such a context, the church will be tempted to measure her success largely in terms of numbers—numbers achieved by cultural accommodation to empty selves.  In this way, ...the church will become her own grave digger; her means of short-term "success" will turn out to be the very thing that marginalizes her in the long run.
J. P. Moreland, Love Your God with All Your Mind (Colorado Springs: Nav Press, 1997), 93-94.

So Where Does the Apologist Start?

Demonstrate the existence of God.   Use reason and facts, not emotion or experiences – once a person accepts God “is”, only then will your testimony be useful.  But beware the pitfalls of logic.  Language often becomes an obstacle to communication, especially abstract ideas.

Many people claim to be scientific, but will then suspend the Law of Causality or the Law of Non-Contradiction to avoid a logical conclusion that does not fit their desired solution.  The conclusion is already written on their heart and they will not accept good reasons:
Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “God does not exist.” They are corrupt; they do vile deeds.  HSCB
A proud heart corrupts wisdom.  This was the cause of the fall of Satan:
Ezekiel 28:17 Your heart became proud because of your beauty; For the sake of your splendor you corrupted your wisdom.  HSCB
A man's heart can deceive his rational mind:
Jeremiah 17:9 The heart is more deceitful than anything else, and incurable—who can understand it?  HSCB
The strategy of the Apologist is to show that it is:
  • Irrational to deny the existence of God
  • Unscientific to reject the truth claims of Jesus of Nazareth, a historical person.
Scientific inquiry will reveal the Truth of Christianity.  This will provide persuasive evidence, but will not provide unassailable proof.  But neither does the “skeptic” have unassailable proof.   So while some will remain unpersuaded to the facts of Christ and God, do not allow the unbeliever, who has faith in something else, and a bias from their world view, to not be responsible for the burden of any proof.   The pagan must also defend their world view, and they cannot.   Their only strategy is to try and force the Christian to have the burden of proof.

Get busy learning something;  especially logic and Apologetics, if not for others, then to at least strengthen your own belief.  Frankly, I see our churches aimed at newcomers and children and teach doctrine and theology at the 3rd grade level most of the time.  Christians are entertained, not educated; emotionally recharged, but not intellectually equipped.   Their “buzz” on Sunday is crushed on Monday by the intellectual arguments of society or the pressures and vicissitudes of life.

The Bible persuades the open minded person with sound reason and the Spirit - it does not ask the believer to suspend the laws of Logic and Epistemology:
  • Law of Non-Contradiction    - part of the scientific method and basis of all logic
  • Law of Causality        -  for every effect there must be a cause.
  • Assumption of the Reliability of Sense Perception
  • Analogical Use of Language    - holding of meaning when using language
Find a place in the Bible where this appears to have defied "science" and you'll find the translation or interpretation is in error, or the reader has brought unspoken assumptions to the text.  Careful examination, and proper hermeneutic application of God's Word will reveal wisdom and saving knowledge.   Don't hide it or suppress it.
